The new site
Is situated in Bangalow and already owned by The Buttery. 40 beautiful acres with a large dam/wetland frequented by waterbirds.
Barry Evans, Director of The Buttery, is currently liaising with reforestation officers to re plant the pastures with native trees and plants to ensure that the property is well covered with appropriate vegetation. This work will provide shade and shelter, a naturally landscaped environment to encourage more birds and wildlife to inhabit the site and to add to the quality of natural environment for healing and recovery.
Improved Facilities
40 Acres of gently sloping farmland, facing north east, with a very large water reservoir stocked with birdlife as the central outlook for all buildings.
residents facilities:
Architecturally designed with an emphasis on improved comfort for residents living communally. The facility will have a potential capacity of 50 residents. (five houses with room for up to 10 residents per house)
administration offices:
Much improved office space for staff of the therapeutic community plus outreach services for drug/alcohol counseling, gambling counseling and counseling people with a mental health and co-occurring substance abuse issue.
community building facilities:
Art room, Yoga room, Meeting room, Community kitchen, Recreation rooms and Gymnasium.
Entry Criteria to become a resident
People from all socio economic backgrounds can apply to enter The Buttery Residential Community Selection criteria includes:
the applicant has a problem drug using history of over two years ie; that the problem is not recreational.
the applicant is 20 years of age or older (unless they are a MERIT referral in which case 18 is the lower age limit but not the preferred age limit)
the applicant is not facing legal proceedings for which his/her stay at The Buttery or application to come to The Buttery will be used as a mitigating factor in Court proceedings. (once again MERIT referrals will have legal proceedings outstanding but this will not exclude them from entry into the program)
an assessment that the applicant has some personal desire to stop using.
owing to staffing constraints, the absence of medical or psychiatric staff and the demands of the program we cannot accept people who have major psychiatric problems.
we do not have the facilities to cater for couples or single parents with children.
residents entering the Buttery for treatment are required to commit 80% of their Centrelink benefit to pay for Board, Lodging and Treatment while they are a resident in The Buttery.
The draft design of the new Buttery
Has been undertaken by Tonkin, Zulaika and Greer – Sydney based architects, Director Barry Evans is working closely with all stakeholders to take the plans to the Development Application stage. The buildings will comply with the new environmentally sustainable policy recently introduced by the state government.
At all times the health and healing components of the buildings will be of paramount consideration in the design and construction of the new Buttery.
